Fish and Jellyfish

E woke up on his 7th birthday in front of the kelp forest at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was a Boy Scout overnight - a big adventure for a kid who doesn't yet do sleep-overs. Lights-out time was an impressively late 11 p.m. S and I stayed at a nearby hotel and met up the next morning to walk through aquarium.

The jellyfish exhibit is a perennial family fave. Reminds me of scuba diving in Jellyfish Lake, Palau. E also got to see the big, new, 9-foot, 7-gill shark, but it was hiding when I got there.

Thank goodness they don't give letter grades

In E's homework folder I found this math worksheet he'd done. He got a big, fat zero on it. At least they don't give letter grades in Grade 1. Math is one of E's favorite subjects, so naturally he was sorely disappointed.

Name that Dog...

New Puppy

Our first week with the new puppy. There is an evolutionary reason that puppies are insanely cute: they're more demanding than they look.

Still, he arrived with knowledge of what to do on a piddle pad and open to suggestions on what not to chew. He goes on rides and seems to think that S is a really big dog. As for Nikita, our "husky mix," he barked and growled at her the moment he saw her. And he loves to nip at her ankles. Fortunately for him, she doesn't seem to take him too seriously.

If you ask the kids what his name is, you'll get two different answers. So I'm still calling him "puppy" for now.

Apparently the food industrialists have re-released the most disgusting drink ever: Fresca. Could it possibly taste any more foul than it did in the 1970s?

What's the one thing you're most neurotic about?

With so many neuroses to choose from, I consulted The Husband about this. With hardly a pause, he answered, "Ingredients." Seems I'm unusually paranoid about chemicals and food-like substances. Maybe it was all the trouble I had in college chemistry and biochem. I've even told my Oreo-loving son that he probably shouldn't eat anything he can't read.
