Still, he arrived with knowledge of what to do on a piddle pad and open to suggestions on what not to chew. He goes on rides and seems to think that S is a really big dog. As for Nikita, our "husky mix," he barked and growled at her the moment he saw her. And he loves to nip at her ankles. Fortunately for him, she doesn't seem to take him too seriously.
If you ask the kids what his name is, you'll get two different answers. So I'm still calling him "puppy" for now.
This has been a bit of a tense week. With school notifications coming in, I've been throughly stressed out, since E has been an elementary school refugee, a boy without a school for next year. Strangely shopping therapy doesn't seem to be working for me; oh, how I've tried! So... we've decided to have a puppy.
E started asking for another dog a month or so after Barclay passed away last summer. He says the house doesn't feel as alive as it used to. And when asked to write something during his school admission visits, he wrote about Barclay's death - twice, I think. Poor little guy.
After Tuesday's martial arts class, I told E that we were going somewhere, a surprise. I had him enter the mystery address into the GPS system, and naturally he wanted to know what we were going to do next. I think he was hoping to get some new Pokemon cards. He was pretty happy when, after meeting up with his dad and sister, he found himself in a room full of eight-week-old puppies. Major frolicking! We went back again after school yesterday and made it official: our pup is "due" at the end of the month.
I was happy to see one of my favorite non-profits on the front page of the NY Times. Best Friends is a no-kill animal sanctuary in Utah, and they're providing lifelong care for the worst-case dogs rescued from the illegal dog fighting ring operated by NFL star Michael Vick. Twenty-two pit butlls have been placed at the sanctuary; the luckier ones will be rehabilitated and placed into homes. As for how those dogs got there, it just kills me that a top-paid sports "hero" was involved in something so cruel and heinous.
Best Friends has posted some updates and videos of the rescued pitbulls, whom they've dubbed "the Vicktory dogs":The people who work at Best Friends are incredibly skilled and compassionate. If you donate $25 or more, you'll get their magazine, which is filled with all sorts of info about animals and heart-warming stories about the amazing work they do.
